The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
